Trimming, splitting & changing clip speed

In Kite you can split, trim and cut out parts of screen recordings to keep just the parts you need.

Click the scene you want to edit and look to the Scene Timeline: purple blocks here represent your media (either screen recordings or manual video/image imports)

To split your media, click the split media button (or CMD + K): Each clip can now be deleted, trimmed or speed adjusted independently: Clips To delete a clip clips, click the clip and press the delete key or click the delete button.

The trim/resize, hover over any clip. You'll see resize handles appear on either side, click and drag to resize the clip: Trimming clips

To speed up or slow down a clip, click the clip. You'll see a clip speed adjustment menu appear above. Choose the speed you'd like to use (1/16X - 32X).

The little flags below the clips show the amount of time

Why record with Kite?

The best way to get footage of your app into Kite is to use our built in screen recorder.

Recording with Kite gives you a number of benefits over importing footage manually:

Kite will capture your mouse moves during the recording so you can apply zoom animations that auto-magically follow your mouse around the screen
Kite will capture your keyboard interactions, so you can apply automatic keyboard and mouse click sound effects
You can enlarge, shrink, hide or totally swap out your mouse cursor after the recording
It also ensures your recordings is the correct resolution and max possible quality

Recording modes

There are four possible recording modes:

Desktop - record you entire screen
Window - record just one application
Area - draw the area of your screen you'd like to record (or choose from preset aspect ratios)
iPhone - record your iPhone wirelessly from your Mac

You can select between these 4 modes using the floating recording toolbar:

Recording overlay In display recording mode, you can record your entire display. You can choose between all the monitors you have connected to your computer, including built-in laptop screens.

Adding zooms (auto cursor follow & manual positions)

Once you take a recording or import media, you will see the scene timeline populate with two blocks:

The purple block is your media
The orange block is a zoom

Scene timeline You can add as many zoom blocks as you want, or remove them altogether.

Deleting zooms

Click an orange zoom block and the press the delete key.

Auto and manual zoom toggle

If you recorded with Kite, when you select a zoom block, you'll see the option to toggle between Auto or Manual mode.

(If you did not record with Kite, only manual mode is available. Kite needs to be able to capture your mouse moves during the recording to make auto zooms work) Auto manual toggle switch

Auto (cursor follow) zooms

Auto mode will automatically follow your cursor, while you control the zoom level.

To adjust a zoom in auto mode, click the zoom block, and then scroll in the viewer window to adjust the zoom level.

Privacy / offline modes - disabling analytics and cloud features

Kite ships with two privacy settings that allow customers to disable analytics and/or cloud features, allowing for sensitive project data to stay on device.

This is useful for enterprise customers with strict security requirements.

Data privacy settings

Analytics & crash reporting

Analytics and crash reporting helps us improve Kite and fix bugs in the app.

This setting allows you to turn off analytics and crash reporting. It will make it harder for our support team and engineers to debug issues and help you though problems, so we only recommend doing it if absolutely required for your use case.

Cloud features

By default, project files in Kite are local files that are stored on your computer.

However, certain Kite features (including AI voiceovers, shareable links, shared projects, shared templates, AI auto-blurs, and more), require sending bits of data off of your computer for processing.

This setting allows you to keep project data on device and disable all features that would require sending data off-device.

Disabling options when you install Kite:

You can disable analytics and cloud features when you open Kite for the first time:

Changing or cancelling your subscription

Using the billing portal:

You can cancel and change your Kite subscription at any time, by clicking the Stripe billing portal link below:

You will be prompted to enter the email address on the account, then you'll receive a login link from Stripe, our payment provider.

After logging in, you can change your plan's billing frequency or cancel your subscription.

If you're on a team plan and are not the account owner, you'll need to contact the account owner to make changes to your billing.

Cancelling in the app:

You can also find the billing portal link in the app at any time:

Make sure you are logged in
Click the profile option in the top right on the app's navigation bar.
Click "Account and billing"
Click the Billing tab
Click "Manage billing on Stripe"

If you're on a team plan and are not the account owner, you'll need to contact the account owner to make changes to your billing.

What if I don't see an option to cancel in the Stripe portal?

If you do not see an option to cancel the subscription in the Stripe billing portal, and instead see a list of past payments, it usually means your subscription has already been cancelled.

Make sure you are logging in with the correct email address for your active subscription. Customers who reactivate accounts often sign up under different email addresses without realizing.

Resizing recordings - "My recording looks stretched /squished / the wrong aspect ratio"

Why does my recording look stretched?

Stretched recordings occur when the aspect ratio of the recording does not match the aspect ratio of the device media frame.

There are a few ways to fix this:

Cropping recordings

In the sidebar media tab, click the crop button:

Here you can adjust the recording's crop and view the aspect ratio required for your chosen device frame:

Recording on the actual device

If you own any of the Kite mockup devices in real life (ie your computer is a 14 or 16 inch MacBook, or you use a standard 16:9 monitor, like the Studio Display), just record the full display on that real life device and then choose the same mockup device from the list. This will ensure that no stretching occurs.

iPhones made in the last 5 years use the same 19.5:9 aspect ratio (including the iPhone model in Kite).
The Studio Display is 16:9, the same as the vast majority of external monitors
The 14 and 16 MacBook Models are both 15.4:10

Setting an area recording to a preset aspect ratio

If you use area recording mode and already know the device frame you want to use, there's a dropdown you can use to set the area
