Resizing recordings - "My recording looks stretched /squished / the wrong aspect ratio"
Why does my recording look stretched?
Stretched recordings occur when the aspect ratio of the recording does not match the aspect ratio of the device media frame.
There are a few ways to fix this:
Cropping recordings
- In the sidebar media tab, click the crop button:

- Here you can adjust the recording's crop and view the aspect ratio required for your chosen device frame:

Recording in the correct aspect ratio from the start
Recording on the actual device
If you own any of the Kite mockup devices in real life (ie your computer is a 14 or 16 inch MacBook, or you use a standard 16:9 monitor, like the Studio Display), just record the full display on that real life device and then choose the same mockup device from the list. This will ensure that no stretching occurs.
- iPhones made in the last 5 years use the same 19.5:9 aspect ratio (including the iPhone model in Kite).
- The Studio Display is 16:9, the same as the vast majority of external monitors
- The 14 and 16 MacBook Models are both 15.4:10
Setting an area recording to a preset aspect ratio
If you use area recording mode and already know the device frame you want to use, there's a dropdown you can use to set the area to the correct aspect ratio for any mockup device, then you know it will fit correctly:
- Take a new screen recording in Kite (Menu > Record > New screen recording)
- In the recording toolbar, choose "Area recording" mode
- Click the dimension icon in the recording area

- Kite will lock the recording area to the correct aspect ratio
- Resize the area, and position your content inside it
Using the rectangle media frame
Another option is to use the rectangle media frame as it will always size itself to your content so it never appears stretched:
