Themes / brand kits – colors, fonts, logos, etc

Themes in Kite centralize brand assets like fonts, text styles, and logos in one place, making it quick to update values across entire projects.

What is a Theme?

Themes in Kite are created in the Theme sidebar tab:

Themes currently contain:
  • Your brand's primary color
  • Text styles
    • Kite comes with a few predefined text styles such as headers, subheaders, numbers, labels, etc
  • Custom fonts
  • Logos (light and dark variants)

Using theme values in your project

Each Kite project gets a theme automatically when it's created.

Any time you update a value in the theme, all of those values update across the project, everywhere they are used.

Text styles

When you create a new piece of text in a scene, you can select the text style to use. The text below is set to "Title" style and will use all the values from the "Title" text style in the project's theme

If you change any of the style attributes on this text block, you'll be presented with a few options:

  • Click "Update theme" to update the theme's text style with the current local values (in the example below, the themes Title text style would be updated to font size 10, and any other scenes in the project using this style would update immediately)
  • Click the purple reset arrow to update the text style back to the theme's value.
  • Leave it as is–all the text style values will continue to inherit from the theme values, except the font size which will remain a local override on this piece of text

If you decide this piece of text actually represents a new text style in your project that you want to save for later reuse, change the text style to custom, then click "Save to theme"

You can then customize the name and attributes of this new style in the theme tab:

Colors and color modes

You can set your brand's primary color:

This color can then be used to keep backgrounds, text and more on brand, across the app.

In the backgrounds tab, the color mode selector (below) allows you to choose between using your theme's primary color or a custom color, as the base color for the dynamic backgrounds

It also allows you to choose the color mode: (white, light, primary, dark, or black).

Colors modes combine the base color and color mode and present an array of appropriate options. E.g. if your brand's color is purple, and you choose dark mode, you'll see an array of dark purple themed backgrounds:

In the text tab, you'll see a similar option to choose between using your theme palette and a custom color:

The theme palette is generated automatically (based on your brand's primary color, the background's color mode the background style) to present high contrast, on-brand text styles.

If you later change your background style or brand color, any text using the theme palette will update automatically

Logos

You can also upload light and dark variants of your brand's logo. If you upload both variants, the logo will automatically switch from light to dark as needed when you change your scene's color mode.

Pro plan - importing themes from past projects

When you start a new project, you can use the theme import option to let your new project inherit the theme from an old project so you don't need to start from scratch:

Team plan - sharing themes with your team

On the Team plan you can choose to share themes with your team via the cloud, so each new project your team makes can start off with your brand's colors, logos, fonts, etc.

Teams can mark one of the themes as the default/canonical theme for their brand. Any new projects created by the team will start from this theme by default.

You can also store additional themes alongside your default theme. This is useful for:

  • Agencies with multiple clients, where each client needs its own theme
  • Companies making video series or campaigns, where each series needs its own unique look
  • Companies with different product lines or features, where each product line has its own brand
